How are we to define the mysterious energy that brings us all together, going way beyond our differences, our singularities and our belief systems? The energy that unites us in our streets, our village squares or in the heart of our cities? The energy that gets us off our couches, that drives and exalts us, that circulates like a wave from one body to another and conveys a shared instinct when faced with injustice, social inequality and the wealth gap.
From Ancient times through the Enlightenment to the present day, history is punctuated with these sporadic uprisings, powered by a dream or a yearning for utopia, but most often by a vital necessity.
This raw energy, this movement of bodies rises up like a living barrier, shifting like a flight of starlings coming apart and reforming in the distance. It is this wild beauty, fuelled by the energy of despair, dreaming of setting off a spark of renewal, that I want to circulate through bodies like pure joy. The hope is that this dance of uprising opens up a space from which the most beautiful rush of unity, the most powerful feeling of freedom, the deepest of brotherly connections can flow.
